Envirothon

Canon Envirothon is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization established to coordinate the delivery of an environmental education program for high school students throughout North America.  Canon Envirothon is headquartered in League City, Texas.

The environmental education program consists of the annual Canon Envirothon Competition in which winning teams from participating states and Canadian provinces compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management.  The competition is centred on five universal testing categories: Aquatic Ecology, Current Environmental Issue (the topic changes each year), Forestry, Soils/Land Use and Wildlife.

The Envirothon program is an effective educational tool, capable of supplementing environmental education both inside and outside the classroom. Led by a volunteer advisor, teams usually meet from late autumn until spring. Teams work collaboratively to develop their knowledge of ecology and natural resource management and to practice their environmental problem-solving skills in preparation for Envirothon competitions.

In order to get to the National Competition, teams have to win first their regional competition and then their state competition.

The Broward County and Florida Envirothon is a problem-solving, natural resource education program for high school students. It is a field-oriented program in which students, working in teams of five, learn to use critical thinking skills, work as a team, and develop problem-solving and communications skills to answer written questions or conduct hands-on investigations about environmental issues. The program focuses on the same following five areas of study as the national competition. These interrelated and broad study areas teach a holistic approach to natural resource conservation and can easily be incorporated into a teaching curriculum.
